6 Tips for Maintaining Your White Smile After Bleaching Your Teeth in Our Phoenix Dental Office
Professional bleaching is a great way to brighten teeth stained by foods, drinks, and smoking, to name a few. Teeth also get darker with age as the enamel wears off and the darker tooth interior shows through. Here is a list of some of the things you can do to keep those new pearly whites sparkling!
Beat Post Operative Sensitivity. Take an Anti-inflammatory
If you are having post-procedure sensitivity, some ibuprofen every six hours or so can help tame it and keep you comfortable. If you received home booster gel to bump up the in-office Laser bleaching, wear the trays every other day or even every third day to keep sensitivity minimized. Using sensitive teeth toothpaste such as Sensodyne will help get rid of sensitivity faster. The results from teeth bleaching are additive. Spreading it out will still get you great results.
Avoid Hot and Cold
Professional bleaching gel is powerful stuff. That's why it's important to have your dentist and her staff apply it and monitor the process. Bleaching them will open up the porosity of the teeth for a week or so. This may leave them sensitive to temperatures. Watch out for cold water, ice creams, hot tea, and coffee. The temperatures can cause discomfort while the teeth settle down and the tiny pores close. Keeping drinks and food at room temperature will save you from being zinged! Some people even need to keep their teeth covered with their lips when they talk or breathe for the first few days.
Avoid Acidic Food and Drinks
Acidic foods and drinks can increase the staining of teeth after whitening. Acids decalcify the teeth, weaken the enamel, and open the pores up to staining and cavities. Foods like carbonated soda, pickles, lemons, and tart candy are very acidic.
If It Stains White Carpet…
Newly bleached teeth are especially susceptible to picking up stains for the first week. Avoid staining foods such as coffee, black tea, and cola. Fruits such as blueberries or raspberries should be avoided. Red wines, soy sauce, and red sauces are on the highly staining list too. Smoking will stain the teeth. Refrain from smoking for the first week.
Dark staining foods and drinks should be avoided for the first week. This is when your teeth are most susceptible to absorbing the stain. If it stains white clothes, it can stain your teeth.
Touch Ups will Be Necessary
Remember, teeth whitening is not permanent. Teeth will keep picking up stains as before. The occasional touch-up with home trays and gel every 6 to 12 months can maintain your white teeth. The initial Laser Bleaching whitens the teeth and also dries them out. Once rehydrated, the white shade will tone down. Using take-home bleaching trays will continue the whitening effect jump-started by the office Laser bleaching.
Some things won’t Change
Long-term results are affected by the original color of the teeth, how stained teeth are original, the amount of wear and enamel abrasion present, and dietary choices. Long-term results vary from patient to patient. Dental fillings and crowns (caps) cannot be lightened. They may need to be changed to match after whitening as part of a comprehensive smile improvement plan
